Cast Iron Teapots (tetsubin),were created by the people of Far East and they have been used for several purposes of which most important has been that of the Tea Ceremony.
At the beginning, they were used for preparing the tea, but with time the teapots were decorated with artistic designs, and cast iron teapots came to be a collector’s object.
Traditionally, the water is warmed in the teapot usually on a source of fire, and then tea is served.
Cast Iron Teapots need some care because of their material.
It is important to keep them dry after use.
Although the inside of the teapot is covered with a special layer,
to protect it, it is better to follow some tips for the maintenance of the teapots.:
1 First wash the teapot with soapy water, but do not rub it with a rough surface.
2 Always dry the teapot thoroughly after use, with cotton cloth.
3 Put a layer of oil in the inside of the teapot and then put it in the oven at 150ο for about 5 hours. When it cools, the teapot is ready for use.
4 Follow the above procedure when there are signs of rust.
5 The Cast Iron Teapot is meant to be used only for tea.
If other food is cooked in it, the teapot will absorb different tastes
.
6 Never pour cold water in a hot teapot.
7 The teapot is not to be washed in the dishwasher.
